Catharina was born in 1940.  Catharina's father was Carel van der Merwe and her mother is Maria Magalena.  Her paternal grandparents were David Frederick van der Merwe and Elizabeth Maria Catharina Cecilia van der Merwe. She has four brothers and three sisters, named David, Ampie, David, Abraham, Annalie, Anna and Elizabeth.  She is the youngest of the eight children.
