Margaret Jane was born in 1874 in Aycliffe, Durham.  Margaret Jane's father was John Kipling and her mother was Jane Robinson.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Ann Mattrass. She had three brothers and a sister, named John, Joseph, Fred and Ann.  She was the oldest of the five children.
