Thomas was born in 1801 in Melsonby, Yorkshire.  Thomas' father was Thomas Kipling and his mother was Dorothy Lumley.  His paternal grandparents are William Kipling and Mary Brunskell.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 56 in 1857 in Darlington.
