Fred was born in 1894 in Aycliffe, Durham.  Fred's father was John Kipling and his mother was Jane Robinson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Ann Mattrass. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Joseph, Margaret Jane and Ann.  He was the youngest of the five children.
