John was born in 1884 in Aycliffe, Durham.  John's father was John Kipling and his mother was Jane Robinson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Ann Mattrass. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Fred, Joseph, Ann and Margaret Jane.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
