Ann was born in 1886 in Aycliffe, Durham.  Ann's father was John Kipling and her mother was Jane Robinson.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Ann Mattrass. She had three brothers and a sister, named Fred, Joseph, John and Margaret Jane.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
