John was born in 1847 in Aldbrough, Yorkshire.  John's father was Thomas Kipling and his mother was Ann Mattrass.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Dorothy Lumley. He had a brother and three sisters, named Joseph, Elizabeth, Margaret and Ann.  He was the youngest of the five children.
