Elizabeth was born in 1838 in Aldbrough, Yorkshire.  Elizabeth's father was Thomas Kipling and her mother was Ann Mattrass.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Dorothy Lumley. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, John, Margaret and Ann.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
