Joseph was born in 1830 in Melsonby, Yorkshire.  Joseph's father was Thomas Kipling and his mother was Ann Mattrass.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Dorothy Lumley. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Ann, Margaret and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the five children.
