Ann was born in 1841 in Aldbrough, Yorkshire.  Ann's father was Thomas Kipling and her mother was Ann Mattrass.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Dorothy Lumley. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, John, Elizabeth and Margaret.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
