Margaret was born in 1840 in Aldbrough, Yorkshire.  Margaret's father was Thomas Kipling and her mother was Ann Mattrass.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Kipling and Dorothy Lumley. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, John, Elizabeth and Ann.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
