Mary Ellen was born in June 1864 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.1   Mary Ellen's father was William Thornton and her mother was Mary (Thornton).  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Thornton and Harriet Asquith.  She had three brothers and a sister, named Albert, Benjamin, James L and Hannah.  She was the youngest of the five children.
