Hannah was born in June 1862 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.1   Hannah's father was William Thornton and her mother was Mary (Thornton).  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Thornton and Harriet Asquith.  She had three brothers and a sister, named Albert, Benjamin, James L and Mary Ellen.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
