William was born about 1844 in Stair.  William's father was James Lees and his mother was Jane Galbraith.  His paternal grandparents were James Lees and Margaret Stewart; his maternal grandparents were William Galbraith and Margaret Limond. He had two brothers and three sisters, named David, John, Margaret, Mary and Jane.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
