Jane was born about 1851 in Coylton.  Jane's father was James Lees and her mother was Jane Galbraith.  Her paternal grandparents were James Lees and Margaret Stewart; her maternal grandparents were William Galbraith and Margaret Limond. She had three brothers and two sisters, named David, William, John, Margaret and Mary.  She was the youngest of the six children.
