Mary was born about 1849 in Stair.  Mary's father was James Lees and her mother was Jane Galbraith.  Her paternal grandparents were James Lees and Margaret Stewart; her maternal grandparents were William Galbraith and Margaret Limond. She had three brothers and two sisters, named David, William, John, Margaret and Jane.  She was the fifth oldest of the six children.
