James was born on July 18th, 1793 in Ayr and his baptism took place there on July 21st, 1793.  James' father was Andrew Lees and his mother was Mary Eaglesom/Eaglesholm/Eaglesome/Eagleshum/Eaglesham.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Lees and Elizabeth Pedine; his maternal grandparents were James Eaglesom/Eaglesholm/Eaglesome/Eagleshum/Eaglesham and Margaret Somerveil/Sommerveil. He had two brothers and two sisters, named David, John, Margaret and Jean.  He was the youngest of the five children.
