John was born on August 28th, 1791 in Ayr and his baptism took place there on August 29th, 1791.  John's father was Andrew Lees and his mother was Mary Eaglesom/Eaglesholm/Eaglesome/Eagleshum/Eaglesham.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Lees and Elizabeth Pedine; his maternal grandparents were James Eaglesom/Eaglesholm/Eaglesome/Eagleshum/Eaglesham and Margaret Somerveil/Sommerveil. He had two brothers and two sisters, named David, James, Margaret and Jean.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
