Margaret was born on July 16th, 1838 in Stair and her baptism took place there on November 15th, 1838.  Margaret's father was James Lees and her mother was Jane Galbraith.  Her paternal grandparents were James Lees and Margaret Stewart; her maternal grandparents were William Galbraith and Margaret Limond. She had three brothers and two sisters, named David, William, John, Mary and Jane.  She was the oldest of the six children.
