John was born on July 24th, 1764 in Dreghorn.  John's father was Gabriel Galt and his mother was Jean Love.  His paternal grandparents were John Galt / Gatt and Mary Walker; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Love and Jannet Brown. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Ninian, Gabriel, James, William, Jean, Agnes, Margaret, Elizabeth, Ann and Agnes.  He was the second oldest of the eleven children.
