James was born on December 22nd, 1773 in Dreghorn.  James' father was Gabriel Galt and his mother was Jean Love.  His paternal grandparents were John Galt / Gatt and Mary Walker; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Love and Jannet Brown. He had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Ninian, Gabriel, William, Jean, Agnes, Margaret, Elizabeth, Ann and Agnes.  He was the seventh oldest of the eleven children.
