Gabriel was born on May 30th, 1769 in Kilmaurs.  Gabriel's father was Gabriel Galt and his mother was Jean Love.  His paternal grandparents were John Galt / Gatt and Mary Walker; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Love and Jannet Brown. He had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Ninian, James, William, Jean, Agnes, Margaret, Elizabeth, Ann and Agnes.  He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
