Thomas was born in August 1846 in West Point, MS.  Thomas' father was John Wesley Gilbert and his mother was Sarah Broughton. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Jackson Marion, Franklin Monroe, John Wesley, Allen Broughton, Zachariah Taylor, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Twin, Twin and Laurania Annie.  He died at the age of 82 on August 12th, 1928 in Erath Co., TX.
