John was born in 1837 in Ashton On Mersey, Cheshire, England.  John's father was John MARSLAND and his mother was Nancy WALKER.  His paternal grandparents were Edward MARSLAND and Martha GRESTY.  He had five brothers and six sisters, named James, Joseph, John, Edward, Thomas, Mary, Sarah, Ellen, Ann, Nancy and Elizabeth.  He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 8 in 1845.
