James was born on June 23rd, 1805 in Ashton On Mersey, Cheshire, England.  James' father was James MARSLAND and his mother was Betty LEIGH.  His paternal grandparents were John MARSLAND and Mary WILLIAMSON.  He had two brothers and five sisters, named John, Edward, Mary, Martha, Hannah, Betty and Rachel.  He was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
