    Aged Pioneer Is Called to His Last Home
    Ex-Treasurer John B. Spalding Dies At His Home in VanBuren [sic] Township Wednesday Afternoon
    
       Ex-treasurer John B. Spalding one of the oldest citizens of the county died at his home in VanBuren township Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock.  The immediate cause of his death was dropsy although he had been in failing health for some years.
       The deceased was one of the well-to-do farmers of Daviess county.  He was born September 24, 1826, and was never farther than fifty miles from the place where he lived and died.
       He attended the common schools, receiving a good education, and at the age of nineteen commenced teaching school.  He followed that occupation for nearly thirty years and 1874 and 76 was elected by the democrats [sic] to the office of county treasurer.
       February 11, 1859 he was married to Miss Mary A. Pate, a daughter of Allen and Mary Ann Pate.  To them were born twelve children, nine of whom are living:  Mrs. James Norris, Mrs. Clementine Brown, Mrs. Charles Singleton and Mrs. Edward Doyle and Mssrs. Simeon, Julian, Walter, Martin and Lewis B. Spaulding [sic].  All reside in Daviess county, except Walter and Martin, who are in the regular army.
       He owned about 190 acres of fine farm land in VanBuren township at the time of his death.  He was a devout member of the Catholic church.
       Mr. Spalding was a rugged specimen of manhood in his younger days and was noted for his honesty of purpose and character.  Back in the sixty's and 70's he was a prominent factor in the history of this county.  He stood for what he believed to be right and allowed no exigencies of the time to sway him.  Up to his death he held the respect of all for this sturdiness of character.  In the death of Mr. Spalding a good man is gone, and the pity is that the youth of today do not seem to have the cardinal principles of truth and morality so securely entrenched in their lives as the noble forefathers.
       The futeral took place on New Year's Day at St. Mary's, Barr township.

    SPALDING, John Barton John B. Spalding was of the well-to-do farmers of Daviess Co, IN; was born 24 September 1826, and has never been further than fifty miles from the place where he lived. He is [the son of] James Ignatius and Julia Ann Montgomery Spalding, who were born in Maryland in 1777 [?] and 1788 [?], respectively. When quite young, the father removed with his parents to Kentucky. In 1819 he came to Indiana. His death occurred in 1840 [sic; should be 1842?] and the mother's in 1877 [sic; should be 1876?]. Our subject attended the common schools, and remained with his people until he attained his majority. At the age of nineteen he began teaching school, and followed that occupation for nearly thirty years. February 11, 1859 [sic; should be 1850], he married Mary Ann Pate, born in Kentucky in 1831, daughter of Allen and Mary Ann Pate. To John B. and Mary A. Spalding the following children were born: George, Clementine, Simeon, Lewis, Frances, Sidney, Joseph, Melvina, Alfred, Daniel, Martin and E. L. Mr. Spalding had been treasurer of Daviess County four years. He owned 201 acres of land, and was a Democrat. They were members of the Catholic Church.
