    bio:
    SPALDING, [James] Ignatius-- born about 1782 in Maryland came to Washington Co., KY, at an early age. It was here on January 30, 1809 that he married Julia Ann Montgomery, also a native of Charles Co., MD, and a daughter of John Barton and Catherine Montgomery. The Montgomery family settled in Charles Co. about 1700. Ignatius Spalding made his first land purchase in Daviess Co., IN on Sept. 30, 1822, being one of the first Catholic settlers in the St. Mary's community. It was in his home that the first Masses were held. To the union of Ignatius and Julia Ann were born the following (9) children: Catherine, who was first married to Charles Gootee, a son of Joseph and Sarah Bramble Gootee, and after his death, she married Bernard Lents, a son of Jacob and Elizabeth Seal Lents; Thomas M. married Mary Ann Kelty; Christina married John Lents, also a son of Jacob and Elizabeth Lents; Hillary married Mary Ann Strange, Valentine married Ann Spalding and later Nancy Ann Grayand; Cecelia married James William Bowling; John Barton married Mary Ann Pate; Nancy Jean married Hillary Patterson; and a son, Edward. Ignatius Spalding lived only to the age of sixty, but Julia Ann died at age ninety years, eight months and twenty days. Both have grave stones at St. Mary's Cemetery.     Spaulding [sic], Ignatius, 25-318, marred Julia Ann Montgomery in Washington, Co., Ky. 30 January 1809 (I-90).  Ignatius was the son of Thomas, a son of Peter & Mary, Peter was a son of Peter and Elizabeth and Peter was a son of Thomas & Katherine Hall Spaulding.

    9/06 CMB note:  I'm not sure about NMB's sourcing for Ignatius' parentage.  She's usually right but not infallible.  The Spalding Memorial fudges Ignatius's parentage.  I've seen other claims for either Peter or Thomas as Ignatius' father, but no solid sourcing.  A 2003 DAR application 816718, volume 4978 from Lucille Marie SPALDING cites this Ignatius as s/o Bennett (b. SMC, MD 1758, d. Washington Cty (now Marion Cty), KY 15 May 1849) and his 1st wife, Eleanor FENWICK (m. MD 1793, d. 1790), giving Bennett and Eleanor's children as Edward (b. 1781, m. 1st cousin Elizabeth SPALDING), Louis Ignatius (b. 1782), Robert, George, Nancy, Monica, Mary, Bennet (sic), Dorothea.  Bennett (Sr.)'s 2nd wife given as Mary FRENCH (m. SMC, MD 15 Feb 1797).  The 1945 DAR application of Mary Alma KUNKLER (no. 349543, vol. 2645) has essentially the same informtion, citing the Spalding Memorial (SM) as the source for Bennett as parent.  However, most recent edition of SM I've seen questions that link.

    [undated copy] I, Ignatious Spalding, of Daviess County and State of Indiana, do make and publish this my last will and testament.  […] First, I direct that my body be decently interred, and that my funeral be conducted in a manner corresponding to my estate and situation in life, and as to such worldly estate as it have pleased god [sic] to entrust me with, I dispose of the same in the following manner to wit:
       I direct first that all my just debts be paid, and my funeral expenses, as soon after my decease as possible, out of the first money that shall come to the hands of my executor, from any portion of my estate
       2. I do hereby bequeath that my dear wife Juli Ann shall have and to hold all of my estate, both real and personal, during her single life; and thirdly for her at the death of her said husband, or as soon after as convenient for her to do, to make sale of all the land(?) and surplus property that she does not stand in need of, on a credit of twelve months after such sale.
       4. Fourthly, I bequeath that Valentine Spalding, my son, and his heirs shall, at the death of his mother, have all the right title and interest to eighty acres of land situated in Daviess County, Indiana, it being the west half of the North West quarter of Section two in township three North, of range five west, in the district of lands subject to sale in Vincennes, Indiana, containing Eighty five acres and fifty hundredths of an acre.  And fifthly that my son John Spalding, at the above named time, to have forty acres of land, to wit the South East quarter of S. E. of section No. 34, in township No. 4 N. of range No. 5 West, situated in Daviess County, Indiana.
       Sixthly.  I direct my executor to give unto the three children that is [sic] now single one bed and bedding, cow and calf, two sheep, and some hogs, in proportion to those that is married, and gone(?) to themselves; and I further bequeath that my real estate and personal property be sold and the amount of the same be equally divided between my several children share and share alike, all but my son Hillary, and he is to also have the same by deducting fifty dollars out of his proportion of which may be coming to him, if there be so much coming to each one[,] after give the above named propert[y] to those above named.
       And I do hereby make and ordain and appoint my Dear Wife, Juli Ann, executor of this my last will and testament.  […]

    "And now at this day, that is to say, at a Probate Court begun and held in Washington, within and for the county of Daviess and State of Indiana, on the second Monday and eighth day of August of the same term of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-two, before the honorable William G. Cole, Judge of our same court now here.  It is ordered by the Court that the proof taken by the Clerk of this Court of the 27th day of July 1842 of and concerning the last will and testament of Ignatious Spalding deceased, the record made of the same, the granting of letters testamentary therein, and the bond taken of the executrix, be confirmed and made as absolute and effectual in law, as if done in open court.

    In 1828 Missionary Rev. Simon Petit Lalumiere of the Old Cathedral in Vincennes celebrated the first Mass in Barr Township, Daviess County, Indiana, in the home of Ignatius Spalding. Susannah ELLIOT.  "He went to Kentucky in an early day; thence to Loogootee, Ind., where he died between 1867 and 1870.  He was a farmer and stock dealer.  He had eight sons and one daughter, and the youngest son, John, lives on the homestead."  Also had a son Stephen-Jackson b. 4 Mar 1815 KY, m. Susan-E.
