James' father was James Thomson and his mother was Jean Duncan.  His paternal grandparents were Philip Thomson and Dorothea Hart. He had six brothers and seven sisters, named James, Alexander, Thomas, William, Philip, David, Dora, Jane, Jessie, Isabella, Janet, Margaret and Helen.  He was the sixth oldest of the fourteen children.  He died at the age of 31 in June 1832 in Ontario.
