Philip's father was James Thomson and his mother was Jean Duncan. His paternal grandparents were Philip Thomson and Dorothea Hart. He had six brothers and seven sisters, named James, Alexander, James, Thomas, William, David, Dora, Jane, Jessie, Isabella, Janet, Margaret and Helen. He was the sixth youngest of the fourteen children. He died at the age of 69 on October 16th, 1875 in Manchester. The funeral took place on October 21st, 1875 in Manchester. He was buried on October 21st, 1875 in Manchester.³⁴
