David's father was James Thomson and his mother was Jean Duncan.  His paternal grandparents were Philip Thomson and Dorothea Hart. He had six brothers and seven sisters, named James, Alexander, James, Thomas, William, Philip, Dora, Jane, Jessie, Isabella, Janet, Margaret and Helen.  He was the youngest of the fourteen children.
