Mary was born on January 22nd, 1822 in Newton-on-Ayr. Mary's father was Andrew Taylor and her mother was Ann Scoffield.  Her maternal grandparents were James Scoffield and Jane Bone. She had five brothers and a sister, named James, Robert, Andrew, David, Joseph and Janet.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
