James was born on August 22nd, 1808 in Newton-on-Ayr. James' father was Andrew Taylor and his mother was Ann Scoffield.  His maternal grandparents were James Scoffield and Jane Bone. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Andrew, David, Joseph, Mary and Janet.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 37 on August 29th, 1845.  He was buried in Kilmarnock.1 1
