Joseph was born in 1830 in Newton-on-Ayr.1   Joseph's father was Andrew Taylor and his mother was Ann Scoffield.  His maternal grandparents were James Scoffield and Jane Bone. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Robert, Andrew, David, Mary and Janet.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
