James' father was Alexander Fraser and his mother was Helen Hamilton. His paternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Isabella Adamson; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Hamilton and Janet McLatchie. He had two brothers and eight sisters, named Alexander, John, Janet, Isabella, Martha, Margaret, Helen, Helen, Mary and Jane. He had an adopted brother named Thomas.
