Thomas was born in August 1840 in Paisley.1   Thomas' father was Alexander Fraser and his mother was Helen Hamilton.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Isabella Adamson; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Hamilton and Janet McLatchie. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named Alexander, John, James, Janet, Isabella, Martha, Margaret, Helen, Helen, Mary and Jane.  He was the third youngest of the twelve children.
