Helen's father was Alexander Fraser and her mother was Helen Hamilton. Her paternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Isabella Adamson; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Hamilton and Janet McLatchie. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named Alexander, John, James, Janet, Isabella, Martha, Margaret, Mary, Mary and Jane. She was the seventh oldest of the eleven children. She died at the age of 27 in 1865 in Paisley.
