Robert's father was John Hasken Erskine and his mother was Betty Ogstone.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Erskine and Barbara Potter; his maternal grandparents were John Ogston and Margaret Brown. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Boyd, John, Robert, Isabella, Betty, Christian, Margaret and Christian.  Robert and Margaret were twins.
