Betty's father was John Hasken Erskine and her mother was Betty Ogstone.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Erskine and Barbara Potter; her maternal grandparents were John Ogston and Margaret Brown. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Boyd, John, Robert, Robert, Isabella, Christian, Margaret and Christian.
