Robert was born on December 30th, 1781 in Kirknewton. Robert's father was John Erskine and his mother was Betty Ogstone. He had two brothers and six sisters, named John, Robert, Boyd, Isabella, Betty, Christian, Margaret and Christian.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
