Mary was born on May 19th, 1793 in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England and her baptism took place there on May 22nd, 1793.1   Mary's father was Edward COWEN (COWEY) and her mother was Mary ARMSTRONG. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Edward, George, James, Ann, Dorothy and Margaret.  She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
