John was born on August 29th, 1781 in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England and his baptism took place there on September 29th, 1781.1   John's father was Edward COWEN (COWEY) and his mother was Mary ARMSTRONG. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Edward, George, James, Ann, Dorothy, Margaret and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
