George was born on November 17th, 1790 in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England and his baptism took place there on November 19th, 1790.1  George's father was Edward COWEN (COWEY) and his mother was Mary ARMSTRONG. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Edward, James, Ann, Dorothy, Margaret and Mary.  He was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
