Maria Clara was born on December 14th, 1878 in Paal.¹ Maria Clara's father was Karel (Carolus Charles) Gaethofs and her mother was Ludovica (Louisa) Van der Heijden. Her paternal grandparents were Josephus Gaethofs and Anna Christina Van Eerdewegh; her maternal grandparents were Sebastiaan Vanderheyden and Marie Elisabeth Meyen. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Josephus, Pieter Jan, Rosalia Seraphina, Maria Philomena, Regina and Maria Catherina Mathilda. She was the youngest of the seven children. She had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Augustinus, Henri, Carolus, Eugeen, Maria Antonia, Maria Coleta, Bernardina and Rosalia Maria.
