Josephus was born on October 28th, 1803 in Paal.¹ His godfather was Franciscus Persoons and his godmother was Maria Gaethofs. Josephus' father was Petrus Franciscus Gaethofs and his mother was Catharina Elizabeth Theunis. His paternal grandparents were Joannes Michael Gaethofs and Anna Catharina Put; his maternal grandparents were Jacobus Theunis and Gertruda Houmeijers. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Jean (Joannis), Carolus, Maria Christina and Marie Claire. He was the second oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 51 on April 10th, 1855 in Paal.²
