Jean (Joannis)'s father was Petrus Franciscus Gaethofs and his mother was Catharina Elizabeth Theunis. His paternal grandparents were Joannes Michael Gaethofs and Anna Catharina Put; his maternal grandparents were Jacobus Theunis and Gertruda Houmeijers. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Josephus, Carolus, Maria Christina and Marie Claire. He was the third oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 49 on December 1st, 1854 in Paal.²
