Malmfrida was born about 1100 in Novgorod, Kiev, Ukraine.1   Malmfrida's father was Grand Duke Mstislas of Kiev I and her mother was Princess Kristina Ingesdottir of Sweden.  Her paternal grandparents were Grand Duke of Kiev Vladimir (Monomach) Rurik of Kiev II and Princess of England Gytha Haroldsdottir (of Wessex); her maternal grandparents were King of Sweden Inge Stenkilsson I and Queen Helena Torildsdatter Blot-Sven of Sweden. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Izyaslav, Vsevolod, Roman, Svyatopolk, Rostislav, Kseniya, Ingeborg, Mariya, Irina, Rogneda and Marie. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Vladimir and Euphrosine.
