Albrecht was born in 1051 in Vlaardingen,Zuid-Holland. Albrecht's father was Count of Holland Floris Holland I and his mother was Countess of Holland Gertrude Saxony. His maternal grandfather was Duke Bernard Saxony II and his maternal grandmother is Elica Schweinfurt. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Pieter, Dietrich, Adele, Bertha and Machteld. He is the second oldest of the six children. He has a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Robert, Adele and Gertrude.
