James Hemings 
James was born in 1765 in Guinea,Cumberland,Virginia. James' father was John Wayles and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Hemings. His paternal grandparents are UNKNOWN Wayles and Unknown UNKNOWN; his maternal grandparents are Captain John Hemings and Biabaye Eppes. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Peter, Thenia, Critty and Sally. He was the second oldest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and eight half-sisters, named John Nelson, Martin, Elizabeth, Tabitha, Anne, Patsy, Lucy, Mary, Betty and Nancy. He died due to suicide at the age of 36 in 1801 in Philadelphia,PA.General Notes
DEATH: He killed himself in Philadelphia only five years after being freed. It is said that the event made Thomas Jefferson hesitant to free any other slaves afterward. Was his suicide due to his treatment as a black free man or maybe his inability to find paid work (because of his color) and support himself?
