Critta Bowle, known as Critty, was born in 1769 in Guinea,Cumberland,Virginia.1 Critty's father was John Wayles and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Hemings. Her paternal grandparents are UNKNOWN Wayles and Unknown UNKNOWN; her maternal grandparents are Captain John Hemings and Biabaye Eppes. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Robert, James, Peter, Thenia and Sally. She was the third youngest of the six children. She had two half-brothers and eight half-sisters, named John Nelson, Martin, Elizabeth, Tabitha, Anne, Patsy, Lucy, Mary, Betty and Nancy.1 -
