Dan "Old Black Dan" was born about 1790. Dan "Old Black Dan"'s father was Nathaniel Austin and his mother was Anna Merritt. His paternal grandparents were Nathaniel Austin and Abigail Richmond. He had five brothers named Edmund, Nathaniel, UNKNOWN, Josiah and Francis. He was the third oldest of the six children. He died on August 20th, 1857 in Shoreham, Addison, Vermont, USA.General Notes

Daniel had three children in Shoreham School District #6 in 1830, but I have not found him on the census. I wonder who he was living with, perhaps one of the Treadways. He had one child in District #6 in 1831, 1832; one in District #15 in 1833; two in District #12 in 1834. Children in these districts directly paralleled the districts and years for his brother, Edmund, except for 1829. I have not found Dan on the 1830 census so maybe he was out of the area. Dan, or Dan the son of Edmund, also had two children in 1840 and three children in 1842. This Dan definitely had four in District #12 in 1849. There was some redistricting taking place in those years, at least twice that I saw. Daniel is on the 1840 census in Cornwall, I believe. His household consists of three males, one under 5 (Jerelich?), one between 15 and 20 (Horace or Holland?), and one between 40 and 50, Daniel, apparently. None are George Cole's age of 24. The 1840 females include one under 5 (Huldah?), two between 5 and 10 (Amanda and Susan?), one between 10 and 15 (Cordelia?), one between 15 and 20 (unknown), and one between 30 and 40, Clarissy probably. The children match up pretty well and the parents' ages, too. Also, Horace or Holland could have been gone or possibly one of them belongs to another family This is probably old Black Dan, son of Nathaniel Austin. Cornwall town records show a Dan Austin dying "a pauper" on August 20, 1857 (FHC microfilm 27463). If Nathaniel and Ann Merritt married in 1783, Dan might have been born in 1790 or so and would be 50 on the 1840 census. The 1849 Shoreham school records, that show "Scholars" aged between four and eighteen, indicate that Daniel had four children enrolled in District #12 at that time: Amanda, Huldah, Roxana, and William. In 1850 Daniel had five: Susan, Jehab, Huldah, Roxana, and William. Susan would have been about 18 and on the borderline for school qualification. The 1850 census shows him as "David" which I have seen interchanged with another Daniel/David Austin. It has to be the same person, however, Daniel is age 62, or born in 1788, Clarissa is 48, born in 1898, Holland 25, Cordelia 19, Susan 17, Jerelich 15, Amanda 12, Hulda 10, Roxana 8, and William 6. All were born in Vermont. There are no real estate or personal property values shown.
